The mission of I AM O’KAH! is to empower all youth to unlock their greatest potential: through mentorship, scholarships and programs that help them navigate through socio-economic barriers to success.
Curriculum is developed to provide tangible life lessons, facilitated by trained mentors. We equip our youth to excel academically; explore self-reliance through learning entrepreneurship; earn, manage and invest money to achieve financial security and lead lives fueled by confidence in their vision and purpose.
I AM O’KAH!, was founded in May 2011 and is a non-profit tax-exempt organization recognized under IRS tax code section 501(c)(3). The organization was named after Kahdine Ann DaCosta, a native New Yorker that transplanted to Baltimore, MD in 1995 to attend Morgan State University. As an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Alpha Delta chapter, Kahdine served her community and the local Baltimore city school system. In February of 2004, Kahdine passed away from breast cancer at the tender age 26, leaving behind many dreams and aspirations of community service and civic engagement. I AM O’KAH! is the legacy of her philanthropic spirit and the dreams she left behind.
During the late 1970s our family started to leave Jamaica in search of the American Dream. We, the younger generation have discovered that the large emphasis our parents placed on college education is not enough for us to attain the financial security they desired. Today, as we continue our pursuit of that dream we are starting businesses and investing for our financial security and teaching our children to do the same. I AM O’KAH! programming serves students in grades 4-12 by providing them the tools they need to unlock their greatest potential. To learn more about our current programming, visit our Programs page. Additionally, we provide post-secondary education support and mentoring through the Kahdine Ann DaCosta Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership. This merit-based scholarship is available to eligible high school seniors that demonstrate a commitment to community service and academic achievement. To learn more visit our Scholarship page.
I AM O’KAH! programming prepares the communities it serves to be resilient and promote economic independence. To achieve this we focus on developing the leaders of tomorrow through the creation of academic and social programs that intellectually stimulate our students and prepare them to be economically independent and socially responsible.
